A close encounter at our whale camp, 2018
I am pleased to welcome you to a fantastic adventure exploring the wonders and wildlife of the Baja Peninsula Sur, from Desert to Sea!
In 2027, We are extremely excited to offer what we believe is the ultimate combination of activities that Baja has to offer. The 12 day itinerary will provide a detailed account of our travels.
In the early dawn of Blue Water Ventures, I led several trips through the rugged peninsula of Baja. One of the most profound experiences of my life occurred while eye to eye with a California Gray Whale in a remote breeding lagoon of Baja. I am very excited to share such experiences with you as we explore Baja’s rich and varied wildlife together.
Our adventure will begin at the Oasis Hotel in Loreto where we hope to see the largest animal to ever roam earth, the majestic Blue Whale. We plan to spend two nights in the quaint coastal town of Loreto allowing us time to explore this beautiful region of the Sea of Cortez. From Loreto, we will travel a few hours to our California gray whale base camp in Lopez Mateos, in the northern region of Magdalena Bay. Located on Baja’s Pacific Coast we will spend three nights/four days whale watching and glamping, some nights listening to the sound of whales from our luxury camp. From whale camp, we then journey to La Paz and offer a lay over day with the option to snorkel among our planet’s largest fish, the whale shark. In La Paz, we will enjoy two restful nights at our cosy hotel not far from the water’s edge. We then plan to spend three nights/four days at our fully catered luxury campsite at Espiritu Santo Island in the Sea of Cortez.
In previous years, Loreto was offered only as an extension for close to $900. By adding Loreto into the program, we were able to provide a day with the Blue Whales at a more affordable price and greatly reduce the amount of driving from one destination to the next.

Sunrise from Our Hotel in Loreto
Hotel accommodations are included on Day One, Day Two, Day Six, Day Seven and Day Eleven. All meals are provided throughout the itinerary.
We are very excited to begin our program in Loreto. We plan to spend our first day together exploring Loreto National Marine Park in this ruggedly beautiful region of Baja. In mid February, our chances are excellent to view a variety of whale species. Blue, Humpback and Fin whales are listed as frequent visitors to this biologically rich marine region of Baja. Traveling by small ponga boats, we will look for the largest species on earth to ever live.
Over the years during our hotel based program in Loreto, we have had close encounters with large baleen whale species and several species of dolphins. However, we are always prepared for Plan B if sea conditions are not favorable. We can offer a guided interpretation of the historic San Javier Mission nestled in the dramatic Sierra de la Giganta Mountain range above Loreto. With this option, we include a leisurely hike learning about the indigenous cultures of the region and their medicinal use of the desert flora.
For centuries, California Gray Whales have traveled 10,000 miles round trip between their summer feeding grounds in Alaska and their winter breeding/calving grounds in the Pacific lagoons of Baja. Traveling in small skiffs into The lagoon of Lopez Mateos, we will wait for the whales to approach us. Naturalist-led beach hikes and kayaking excursions through the mangroves within the lagoon will also be offered.
Well known as a nursery and mating zone for Gray Whales, the sheltered lagoon of Lopez Mateos is an ideal location for our Pacific based whale camp. “Friendly interactions” initiated by the whales themselves are a fairly common occurrence here. For more information on our camp locations, please read our itinerary
In the ruggedly beautiful Espiritu Santos Island in the Sea of Cortez we will kayak, snorkel, fish, hike and relax from our dramatically scenic beach camp. At both sites, we have the comfort and ease of boat supported camps.
All activities are optional. We typically cover 2-4 miles when kayaking in the Sea of Cortez or Magdalena Bay.
Finally, to complete our Ultimate Baja Adventure, we have built in a lay over day in La Paz with the hopes of offering an optional snorkeling tour among the planet’s largest fish, the whale shark.
