Update on Dengue Fever
A Message From The Team at Matafonua Lodge & Sandy Beach Resort, April 20th 2026
Dear Traveler’s to Tonga in 2026
Thank you for your questions regarding the recent dengue cases reported in Tonga. We
understand that news of outbreaks can be concerning, and
we want to reassure our guests that
both Matafonua Lodge and Sandy Beach Resort remain unaffected at this time.
The health and comfort of our guests and staff are always our highest priority
. As part of our
ongoing preventative measures, our teams at both resorts are actively reducing potential
mosquito breeding areas by carefully managing and eliminating standing water around the
properties. In addition, we are carrying out regular mosquito control treatments in outdoor
areas.
These treatments are conducted in a controlled and targeted manner using professional
mosquito control methods designed to reduce mosquito populations while remaining safe for
guests, staff, and the surrounding environment.
This is a common preventative practice used in
many tropical resorts worldwide.
As the mosquito that carries dengue is primarily active during the daytime, we recommend that
guests use insect repellent during the day, particularly if spending time outdoors
. Wearing light,
loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs can also provide extra protection, especially if
you plan to go for walks through bush tracks or explore the islands.
Both resorts continue to operate normally,
and guests are enjoying the beautiful weather and
beaches as usual. We remain in contact with local health authorities and will continue to
monitor the situation closely.
If you have any questions or concerns about your upcoming stay, please do not hesitate to
contact us. Reach out to Kim Powell, owner of Blue Water Ventures who will forward your questions to us.
Warm regards,
The Team at Matafonua Lodge & Sandy Beach Resort
